East 14th: Tales of a Reluctant Player. In the spirit of John Leguizamo’s Freak, Sarah Jones Bridge and Tunnel and Whoopi Goldberg’s Whoopi, comes this hilarious solo show chronicling the true tale of a young man raised by his mother and ultra-strict step-father as a middle class, straight A, God-fearing church boy. The boy, however, wanted to be just like his dear old Dad. Too bad he didn’t know dear old Dad was a pimp. Very funny, definitely poignant – a ride down a street you won’t soon forget.
“Hilarious. The audience can’t stop laughing. Don Reed plays all the characters with both ease and inexhaustible energy.” - The New Yorker

"Reed stretches his elastic features and voice to inhabit people of every race, age and gender"
– San Francisco Chronicle

The piece chronicles the true story of Reed’s collegiate and Tinseltown misadventures in the electric-pink '80's. As the awkward son of a pimp struggling with college and a merciless Hollywood, Reed tried being a stripper and a gigolo, but ended up as a live-in waiter at an unforgettable retirement hotel—breakfast-sandwiched between the elderly, employee drifters and drug-addicted dreamers.
A San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Nominee - Reed is also the performer, director and playwright of one of the longest-running solo shows in Bay Area History—his highly regarded East 14th.

"Flat-Out Hilarious...electrifying performer" –KQED/PBS/NPR

Hot on the heels of the hilarious and critically acclaimed East 14th and The Kipling Hotel, Don Reed returns with the next installment of his wonderfully wild and awkward autobiographical journey.

Can You Dig It? The 60’s Back Down East 14th, rewinds to the 60’s – a prequel-plus – going back to young Don’s formative “Stand By Me” years in Oakland grammar school when the family was “whole.” Before his father became a pimp – before his mother reluctantly became a Jehovah’s Witness - a lot of wonderful, scary, amazing, unnecessary, cool, moving, unbelievably true stories unfolded. From the Beatles to the Black Panthers, James Brown to the Jerk, MLK to JFK to the KKK – come and see the 60’s through the blinking eyes of an awkward kid who’s just trying to fit in.
